Geographic location

Location

Cyprus is situated in the northeastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa and it‘s the third largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily and Sardinia.

It is 96 km west of Syria, 385 km north of Egypt, 980 km southeast of Athens and 328 km west of Israel. Its total area is 9.251 sq. kms comparable in size to that of Lebanon, Puerto Rico and Connecticut in the USA.

The strategic location of the island has played an important role in its continuing development into a financial centre.

Climate

Cyprus enjoys perhaps the best type of Mediterranean climate. Cyprus has a pleasant climate with dry summers and mild winters, enjoying about 300 days of sunshine. The rainy season is usually confined to the period from November to February.

Infrastructure

Cyprus is well served by sea, air and telecommunications. Due to its advanced telecommunications network and the superb regional and global connectivity on offer, the island is considered as one of the most important telecommunication hubs in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East region.

In addition, Cyprus’ role as a regional commercial and business centre, coupled with the increasing tourist traffic, has led to the development of a wide network of air routes offering excellent connections with Europe, Africa and Asia.

Furthermore, the country’s two international ports situated in Limassol and Larnaka are the country’s main sea gates for seaborne cargo and passenger traffic. Both ports have turned into important regional warehouse and distribution centres.
